What an independent insurance agency does for you

How independent agents differ from captive agents and buying direct, and what that means when you shop, switch, or need help.

Short answer

An independent agency isn't tied to one insurance company. It can get you quotes for the same coverage from several companies and walk you through how they differ. If you want to switch companies later, you can keep the same agent.

What are the ways to buy insurance?

There are three common ways to buy. You can go straight to an insurance company online or by phone. You can work with a captive agent, who sells for one insurance company. Or you can work with an independent agent, who can quote several.

All three can get you good coverage. Buying direct can work well if your needs are simple and you like to handle things yourself. The difference is how many choices you see, and who helps you sort through them.

What are the ways to buy insurance?
What you get Buying direct Captive agent Independent agent
Insurance companies to choose from One Mostly one Several
Who helps you The company’s phone or online team Your agent Your agent
Comparing prices You shop each company yourself You shop other companies yourself Your agent quotes several for you
Switching companies later You start over Usually means a new agent You can often keep your agent

What’s a captive agent?

A captive agent works for one insurance company. Many have their own local office, but they sell that company’s policies. They often know those policies very well, and that can be a real plus.

The trade-off is choice. Say that company raises your price or won’t cover something you need. A captive agent usually can’t move you to a different company. Some can place a policy their company doesn’t offer somewhere else, but their main menu is one company.

What does an independent agency do differently?

An independent agency has agreements with several insurance companies. That lets it quote the same coverage with each one and put the options side by side.

Say you want quotes on your home and car. Shopping one company at a time, you’d fill out the same forms again and again. An independent agent collects your details once and runs them with several companies. Then the agent explains why one quote is lower than another.

It also helps when your needs don’t fit one company. Say you own a home, drive a car, and run a small landscaping business. One company might be great for your home and car but not insure landscapers. An independent agent can place the business policy with another company and keep track of all of it for you.

Comparing the same coverage

Price differences often hide coverage differences. Say one quote is $200 a year cheaper. But its deductible, the part you pay first on a claim, is $2,500 instead of $1,000. That’s only a better deal if you’re fine paying more when something happens. A good agent points that out before you buy.

What happens when you want to switch?

Life changes, and so do prices. Say you add a teen driver and your car insurance price jumps at renewal. An independent agent can shop it again with other companies. If one fits better, you can move your policy and keep the same agent.

That only works with companies the agency works with. No agency works with every insurance company. Some companies sell only through their own agents, or only direct. Still, a wider menu gives you more room to move without starting over.

Note

Your agent helps you choose and manage your coverage. The insurance company handles claims and decides what to pay. When you file a claim, an agent can help you understand your policy and the steps, but the insurance company makes the call.

How do you pick the right agent?

Most agents, captive or independent, are paid a commission by the insurance company you choose. It’s usually built into the price of the policy. So the label matters less than how the agent treats you. Look for someone who:

  • Explains coverage in plain words, not just the price.
  • Asks about your life, like your home, your cars, your business, and who drives.
  • Gets back to you when something changes or goes wrong.
  • Tells you when your current policy is still your best choice.
