  1. Insurance basics

How to read your insurance declarations page

Short answer. Your declarations page is the cheat sheet at the front of your insurance policy. It shows who and what is covered, for how long, the most the insurance company would pay, what you pay first on a claim, and your price. Give it a quick read every time you renew or make a change.

  2. Commercial

General liability or a business owner's policy: which fits your business?

Short answer. General liability can pay when someone says your business hurt them or broke their stuff. Say a customer slips in your shop. A business owner's policy, or BOP, often adds coverage for your own building, equipment, and stock. It's built for small businesses, but not all qualify.

  3. Insurance basics

What an independent insurance agency does for you

Short answer. An independent agency isn't tied to one insurance company. It can get you quotes for the same coverage from several companies and walk you through how they differ. If you want to switch companies later, you can keep the same agent.

  4. Life

Term and whole life insurance, side by side

Short answer. Term life lasts for a set number of years, like until your kids are grown. It can pay out if you die during that time, but not after. Whole life is meant to last your whole life and builds cash value, a kind of savings inside the policy, so it usually costs more for the same payout.

  5. Personal

What umbrella insurance can cover, and who should consider it

Short answer. Umbrella insurance is extra coverage for times you're blamed for someone else's injury or damage. It can kick in after your home or car policy pays its most. Say you cause a bad crash and the bills go past your car insurance limit: the umbrella can pay the rest, up to its own limit.

  6. Health

What to have ready before you compare health plans

Short answer. Before you compare health plans, jot down your doctors, the prescriptions you take, how often you usually need care, and a rough idea of your household income. Those details tell you which plan really fits. The plan with the lowest monthly price isn't always the cheapest once you use it.

  7. Commercial

Does your personal auto policy cover your work truck?

Short answer. It depends on how you use the truck and who owns it. Personal car insurance often limits or leaves out business use. So if your truck hauls tools, equipment, or goods for work, you may need a commercial auto policy instead.
